In the summer of 2003 I worked as
media consultant on the Rhodes Trust’s centenary celebrations.
The famous scholarship scheme (set up in
diamond magnate Cecil Rhodes’s will) has enabled high-flying
students from the USA and the Commonwealth - including Bill
Clinton, former Australian PM Bob Hawke and British Airways
boss Rod Eddington - to study at Oxford.
My brief? To get the celebrations the maximum
possible media exposure.
The highlight of the celebrations was a
gala night at Westminster Hall attended by Nelson Mandela,
Bill Clinton and Tony Blair.
I lined up TV (BBC, CNN) and print (Times,
Telegraph, Independent and Guardian) coverage of the event
and went on to place related articles in the New York Times,
Sunday Times, Financial Times and the Globe & Mail.
Afterwards Dr John Rowett, Chief Executive
of the Trust, thanked me for the "tremendous contribution"
I had made to the success of the centenary celebrations.
